If you dont already know about TED talks just go to Playstore and download the App There are hundreds of talks from experts on almost any subject you can imagine, from Astronomy to Zoology.

A Trans Man Ivan Coyote delivered this talk in November 2015 in Vancouver before the issue became a hot topic in the USA

    He introduces the talk…

“There are a few things that we all need, fresh air, water, food ,shelter love, and a safe place to pee. For trans people who dont fit neatly into the gender binary, public restrooms are a major source of anxiety and the place where they are most likely to be questioned or harassed”

    worth a listen..

I can understand this view however I have never had any concerns or negative comments regarding my need to use women’s toilets. In fact just today, I started a new job as a volunteer. My male supervisor showed me where the women’s toilets were and then later, the lady with whom I shared an office went out of her way to take me to the woman’s toilets and other staff areas. I met probably up to 20 staff members and felt very much accepted.

    Hi Jane
Ive never had a problem either in many years using the female toilet when out in public places.

However I just thought this talk demonstrates the problems that exist for many Trans people in other countries . I think we are very fortunate to have a society in Australia which seems more accepting than other so called developed countries .

    Long may it continue.

I haven’t listened to the talk but I have a number of TG friends in various states in the US that fear using the ladies and now either use the unisex/disabled toilets or just don’t go out like they used to.

Yes, we are very very fortunate in Australia and I for another hope it stays that way.

I’m a little sick of the Yanks trying to impose their values on the rest of the world, and that includes the use of the ‘Ladies’ by those characters dressed as women so they can leer and perv on the genuine women and girls having a pee. My question is, do Transmen go to the ‘Gents’ to oggle and perv on men and boys? Is there a double standard somewhere?

I worked part-time at a private university in Bangkok for a few years. We had several TG students who mixed in with the rest of the student population without fear or rancor from anyone. They used whatever toilets they felt were appropriate to them.

Some years ago, one or two other universities in Thailand talked about installing gender neutral toilets but in the end it never went ahead because there simply was no need.

I wonder if this sort of acceptance would happen at an Australian university environment?

I think, from what I’ve seen on Facebook and US media the Trans using, female Toilets issue is being driven by Religious Zealots, bigots and homophobes. Those of us who identify as female be it pre op or post op, go in, answer natures, wash our hands and get out. Logically they have no argument as female toilets have cubicles. I’m yet to use a female toilet where I’ve seen a females anatomy as the Doors are shut. I can understand when it comes to say a teen ore op transgirl. Using school change rooms but that can be overcome by having her change before the other girls and or after. The zealots if they win re Toilets will set back our cause to be just respected as individuals who identify different to how we were born. It’s interesting how selective Religious zealots can be. Turn the other cheek says the Bible, Only God shall judge. If a transwoman couldn’t use a female toilet, she can’t use the men’s as she would face ridicule and her safety would be at risk. I read recently of a Lesbian in the USA who with clothing and hairstyle looked male. Three Make Police harassed her in the toilet for using a female toilet. The irony. Besides the fact they harassed a genetically born female they were MALE so they maybe should be in trouble themselves if they say makes shouldn’t be in a woman’s Toilet Block

I have been using female toilets for the last 20 years without the slightest problem. The only occasion with a minor problem was in quite different circumstances. I was in Germany in a restaurant in male dress and the male toilet was out of action. The manager told me to use the female one where I was roundly abused by a German women (I speak German)and it gave me great pleasure to tell her I was acting under orders.
