I have a few wigs that I want to get re-styled or just a basic trim. Who is the best sort of person for me to ask to do it?
Is it just a case of going to a hairdresser sort of place or would I be advised to go to a specialist wig stylist ?

A professional theatrical hair stylist could help – they are used to handling acrylic and human hair wigs on a daily basis. If you do decide to go ahead then just wash the hair as usual before passing it on, preferably on a stand
Advertising is not allowed on TgR so all I can say is that I am sure you know of someone you have visited before for a make-up lesson many moons ago.
Hair salon people MAY be able to help but most would be used to human hair only and may not have the required wig – attachable hair stand for the styling. Good luck.

    hi Bambi
Yes, I have contacted our mutual acquaintance last year and he replied and so that’s the likely path I will follow. A drag queen I know quoted $150 per wig and I just want to know if that’s fairly standard but she is more self taught than trained.
As far as I know, my wigs are human hair

For my human hair wigs, I go to a standard hair stylist. The first time I went there I had a wig that was too long and I wanted to change the colour. I showed Elizabeth the wig and she said: “Oh yukky colour, who’s it for?” I asked her if she would faint if I told her it was mine and she just laughed and said that was OK. I then asked if she minded if I came for the appointment as a girl and again she said no problem. I took two wigs so I could wear one while she washed the other; it was too difficult to wash the wig while still on my head. I now go to her regularly to have my three human hair wigs trimmed, washed and styled. Of course, trimming only needs to be done once or twice. Elizabeth charges me $50 per wig usually. Last time I went she only charged me $20. She is a real sweety.
So if you live anywhere near the NSW Central Coast, let me know and I will tell you where she is. Otherwise, you may be able to find a user-friendly hair stylist in your area. Of course, if you have synthetic wigs you will need to look for a wig specialist for help.

$150 for one wig styling seems quite a high price to me. I am sure you can work out something with the person you mentioned.

    Hi Melissa,
Styling a natural hair wig can be done by a good hair dresser with wig styling experience; your best choice would be to find a wig stylist, who can advise you on your wig as a professional. I use a salon where Pete & Rick are both hairdresser’s and wig stylist, so if you’re near the Hunter let me know. How much to pay, $150 sounds way over the top, I currently pay $45 for a wig service and any trimming required. I found my salon using a Google search and from talking to a few others in the area if you go into the city centre you will pay city prices; in the suburbs prices seem more realistic. My other advice is when you think you have found the salon you need go visit it and have a talk with the staff to see if they are what you are looking for, then make an appointment that suits you. a Professional wig-fitters will also be able to teach all sorts of trips and tips on wig care and cleaning, its well worth the expense when you consider how much we pay for a good wig.
