Were you given a unisex name?
Whilst none of us had any choice in the names we were given by our parents at birth, I have been surprised to find that I wasn’t the only person in TgR who was blessed with a fairly unisex name.
Which leads to the question – how many more of us were blessed with apparently prescient parents?
I found the following list of ‘unisex’ baby names on http://www.babynameguide.com
I know people will always argue about what is and isn’t “unisex” so lets use the following without debate. Is your name on the list?

It seems that list omitted some of the names that are used by men and women:

I was christened Dallas John Brady, much later in life whilst trying to impress and suppress the real me I became intrigued by Austin Danger Powers and consequently changed my name to Dallas Danger Brady. So now I was able to say ” Danger is my middle name baby, yeah “.
This worked fine for a time until I woke up to myself, realized I wasn’t living my life to be who I really was and PRESTO ( insert Bullwinkle voice here ) allowed the real me out and haven’t looked back. Everyday just gets better and better. Oh! and now my name is Dallas Brady, often imitated but never surpassed.Love to you all.

The arguments that rage over this are not something I want to clutter the forum with. Just type “Is adrian a boy or girl name” into Google and you will see what I mean. So as the topic starter…let’s stick with the one list please.
I also came across an article that pointed out that shortened names are frequently more unisex that the originals. This sort of applies to Samuel or Samantha, Caroline or Carl, Melvin, Melanie, Melinda or Melissa!!!

Well, my name is on the list. I merely changed the last letter on my male name and became Terri. That said, I have come across a couple of women who spell their first names as ‘Terry’. When I am Terri I change subtly but remain basically the same person. When I am Terry I am, as one CD mate said to me, “Terry with the Y fronts”.

Its funny, my last name is on the list and everyone at school/work always called me by it, but not intended to be mean spirited, its just something that stuck.
but since transitioning no one calls my by it, its always Beth.

I too was able to feminize my given name and Chris is fairly unisex around these parts. Christina is a bit more exotic than Christine and also my ex wife had a sister called Christine and didn’t like me to use that. funny thing is that my ex ex is called Christina but has another shortened version as a common name.

Edward to Edwina, ‘i have two other names as well german & Prussian = Lithuanian

It took me a while to accept that my name works as well en femme. I think it was mainly due to a foolish fear of discovery that I used various female names online before coming full circle to Alex. Truly my own mother wouldn’t recognise my photo here. Well, maybe now that I have told her.
I also felt as if I perhaps should separate my female self from the male. But I always tended towards names that were close to mine like Alison, Alicia, Alli. But I am not two people so Alex it is and shall be. Hoorah for self realisation!

As my West Aus namesake says, just changing the last letter works well,
& I do know a GG who uses Terry, very good at parties where you don’t have to think about what people call you, I doubt that it was deliberate, dad wanted to call me Mick, so I guess Michelle would have been close

Are you bragging, Amanda? Then turning around and preventing actual genuine discussion by stopping people from commenting about their or other peoples names not being on the list? As you said, this is an American list…yet you do realise that most of us live in Australia? I wonder what your reaction would be if someone posted a similar list and your name was not included? Oh, of course you would be totally impartial and unbiased and wouldn’t pull rank as the webmistress.
Anyway…my birth name is Luis. Some people pronounce it “Louise”. I am fine with that. It’s all just labels and holds no real significance other than what you personally attach to it. I liked Lina as an alternative, and I am happy with that choice…

Otherwise it would be a waste of time running the poll.

Well nearly 50 people have voted so far in the poll (at the top of this posting).
I have to say I am very surprised that about a third of those who took the mini-survey have a name from their parents that is included in the list of “intersex names” I chose.
This is a much higher percentage that i would have expected as the intersex names are mostly fairly “unusual”.
Is it that those on the list have rushed to confirm this – but others have been reluctant to vote?
So does this statistic reflect reality….I wonder! -

I’ve just cast my vote of ‘no’ only to then go & have a second look & discover that my middle name is on the list but spelt differently – either spelling makes it unusual anyway though.
My given names were Craig Aaron, my name now is Chloe Aaron.
Aaron is a Hebrew name & those of us who prefer to pronounce it with a Hebrew inflection, pronounce it as Air-ron. The name on the list is Arron, it’s probably only spelt differently because that’s what Americans insist on doing.
