Georgina Beyer could be seen a city girl. Born in Wellington she has spent much of her life in big urban centres.
Her city slicker image has been highlighted by Ms Beyer’s recent foray on television’s Dancing with the Stars. It has left her fitter and much thinner than she was.
But there is something of the country, too, in the the MP for Wairarapa.
Ms Beyer has held the seat for six years. The electorate stretches from Cape Palliser to just south of Hastings covering a vast rural area.
This election she is not standing in Wairarapa again, instead she is placed 34 on Labour’s list.
Country electorates are not renowned for their liberal attitudes on social and political issues and Ms Beyer has the distinction, whether she wants it or not, of being the first transexual to be elected to Parliament in New Zealand.
How does she relate to her rural constituency?
“No, the better question is how they relate to me,” she laughs.
“I am who I am, always have been the same and I see myself as a New Zealander. I may have lived in cities, but I have been in touch with farming life.”
