  Gender stereotyping

  This morning I was at the birthday party of my 3 year old granddaughter and as I watched her playing with the other kids , I had a thought.
  Her Mum is not a girly girl and her Dad has a wide range of interests but would be considered , ” blokey”. She is given a wide range of toys and loves to play with Lego and makes dinosaurs and helicopters as well as houses etc. Ella is very much a girl, loves dolls and wants her nails painted but loved the fire engine I got her today. She does gymnastics and trampolining but loves to make me a pretend ” meal” out in the cubby with her toy oven.
  The thing that saw I was how ridiculous it would sound for someone to say that she should be forced to play footy or cricket or just play with fire engines and trucks and not dolls. Should a boy, however,( not necessarily in our family!) be as interested in the girly things as much as she is , then I am sure that they would be guided , overtly or otherwise to conform to a gender stereotype more ” suited” to the adult opinions around them .
  It struck me as a good argument to show those who insist on the stereotypes, just how ridiculous their argument is.
