TgR Wall Forums Gender Diversity in Australia The Big Bad? World LGBT Rights Movement in Thailand

Most of the year, I live in Chiang Mai in Thailand. It’s a place where I feel little or no threat about going out dressed as a girl. The locals seem to accept transgender people as part of the scene, albeit this is not reflected in the Thai legal system which discriminates against LGBT people simply by ignoring their existence and offering no legal or social support. Change was promised for the last post-coup constitution but did not manifest itself in the final article. The Thai parliament is currently debating same-sex marriage, but the proposal is to allow civil unions only and once again there would not be any legal or social support offered by government departments to same-sex couples (as is already provided for different-sex couples).

This documentary was produced by an American journalist living in Chiang Mai. His introduction says:
“Assuming some of you attended the 2020 Chiang Mai Pride pride parade last February, here is a documentary I recently completed about that event — it’s history and meaning. …”

The documentary skims the surface of the welcoming facade to reveal that all is not well in the LGBT movement in Thailand and there is still a long way to go before equality can be achieved, if ever. Judge for yourself.
