I hope this series gets shown on one of the FTA television networks here, without being butchered.

Re: My Transsexual Summer Channel 4 (UK) TV Documentary Series
4 episodes of this series have been broadcast. It features on 7 trans people meet up weekly in a large country house for a series of weekends (over 3 months) and share their experiences. The program then follows one person for the rest of the week.
There are a variety of people from the trans community included and they are at various stages (from having SRS) to being out only 3 months. There are F 2 M and M 2 F in the group.
The series is perhaps better than some one off ‘documentaries’ that have been produced previously. Most of these previous ‘documentaries’ I have seen have featured more on partners issues and perhaps fetish dressing than people who are serious about perhaps transitioning. In this way this series is covering perhaps some, up to now, not covered ground.
While many members may not find anything too new in the series, perhaps it is important for the wider (non trans community) to be able to see more than fetish dressing and hiding in the closet. It shows what the people featured are going through as human beings.
One thing that is somewhat surprising is that the people selected did/do not seem to have much of a support group in place, whether in real life or on the Internet. Of course very few TV programs are 100% ‘real’ so obviously to make the series more interesting to viewers, perhaps people were deliberately selected who had had little support.
The internet is a great support system especially for people transitioning – not just for basic information but for sharing experiences etc. This fact has not been shown much in the TV Series.
The people selected may not include the whole variety of types of trans people in the community but with 7 it perhaps is not a bad selection. Members have no doubt met personally many types of people in real life as shown on the TV Series.
The series can be viewed on the Channel 4 website, and I am sure there are torrents around too if members wish to do a search. Members can also give comments and feedback directly to the people featured in the Series at the same site.

I was discussing my transgender identification with them & they commented that they had viewed a ‘very interesting doco the night before’. They commented that it really alerted them to some of the difficulties experienced by Tg people. The fact that they had viewed it was of benefit to me & helped greatly in our discussion about me & Tg people generally.
I subsequently viewed it on ABC iView, it is available for veiwing for 14 days after it initially goes to air. I sent a link to my mum last night & she emailed me saying it was helpful for her. Having viewed it she was prompted to ask me some pertinent questions & also make some worthwhile observations.
Maybe someone elses friends or relatives out there might benefit from having a link sent to them, check it out on ABC iView. -

Guest14/10/2012 at 9:29 pmSo totally agree, this show is a sympathetic portait. The programme manages to cover the (nearly) whole TGR diaspora through the eyes of seven people. Covers F tm transition.MTF transition.Interestingly programme also covers people who do not wish for a specific gender identity.I watched it on ABC2 Iview.Very good spot Erika.I Will be watching the whole series. A group of tg folks of all shades put into each others proximity. What is amazing is how quickly the group bonded. Each new arrival greeted with enthusiasm, love and understanding.XN
Post Script/Addendum
After reading some of the previous quotes regarding this subject.I believe my native NW England and UK generally has a very poor attitude to TG and gay Issues.Australia and NZ appear more relaxed.Xn -
I missed it on Friday, but it was seen by my wife who enthusiastically verbally repeated the episode to me on Saturday morning. I did see it via the internet. I believe the participants came from varying walks of life and differing points on the gender spectrum. The location of filming was gorgeous. Who could not feel for all the partricipants? I resonated and identified with the older woman (ex policeman); didn’t catch her name. I felt that beneath the smiling surface she was thinking of her soon to be surgery (who wouldn’t) and looking back on the journey already taken. And looking forward to when she would feel complete, but the journey, process continues throughout her life. I cried and wished that I was in her place. I assume we will, as viewers follow her journey to some point.
Looking forward to the continuation of the series. -

I watched the first episode Friday and found it very interesting I was viewing it by myself when my 18yr old daughter walked in and I instinctivley switched channels, she asked what was I watching and I told her truthfully what it was about…. she said put it back on and she sat with me and watched it for about 10 minutes before she quietly went to her room i think she was a little embarrased. At least it was 10 minutes of possible understanding….
Tonight (monday) my daughter was in a very playful mood and we had a good night joking around where we both laughed hard poking fun at each other ….this dosn’t happen that often…. at one stage something jokingly came up where I said she would just run away screaming like a big girl…. where she replied … your the big girl that would run away… I said what and she replied… you heard you giggling old girl and stuck her tongue out at me. I laughed hard .
Sorry if this is off topic but I believe the television show may have helped spark something ……

Thanks for a great post ! Don’t apologise for being off topic – I think it is ‘right on’. It highlights that discussing gender issues doesn’t always have to be ‘heavy going’. If the situation arises where humour can be used to reach some little understanding or insight that is probably the best outcome of all.
Thanks for sharing that great moment with your daughter.

Guest18/10/2012 at 9:42 amI watched the one on tues nite – dont know if that is the new series or not but it was the start of series 1 or 2 .I thought it very very good .What gets to me when I see something like this is how damm difficult it is to trans late in life and how there always seems to be that thought of :why didnt I do this sooner “… i sincerely hope publicity and increasing public acceptance of trans people will encourage more youing people to seek help an dI dont mean counselling to “correct ” their condition .Counselling to enable them to accept themselves more yes !
hugs

I’ve only seen the promo for the show but it certainly seems interesting. More positive information for the general public would benefit all.
