“Becoming Westerly” by Jamie Brisick, Allen & Unwin 2015
I recently had this book leap off the the bookshop new releases shelf into my hand. It is the true story of how Peter Drouyn, Queensland surfing legend, after years of suppression, decided to let his inner female Westerly Windina come out to play. It covers the history of surfing in Australia, warts and all from the 1950s and Peter/Westerly’s transition over the last few years. Westerley is just one year younger than me but obviously has better hairdressing advice. Reading the book my draw dropped open during the first chapter and stayed that way until the end. A movie version is to follow later this year. -
