The Prevalence of Transgenderism – an update.
There have been many studies that present estimates of how many people are transgender. All of the studies grapple with the problems of inadequate sample size, bias in electing their sample, and the lack of visibility of those who seek to keep their gender variance hidden. So their “answers” tend to vary widely.
But a couple of years ago Ami Kaplan, a psychotherapist in New York presented a met-analysis contrasting the findings of 11 studies. You can find her blog post here.
http://tgmentalhealth.com/2012/02/13/the-prevalence-of-transgenderism-an-update/In summary the estimate from studies in this century vary from 1 in 200 to 1 in 21000. Quite a big spread!!
This uncertainty in prevalence mans that anyone who quotes a definite figure is talking off the top of their head, and any statistics that rely on prevalence (such as suicide rates) are probably very inaccurate.
But this is a space that is worth keeping an eye on. Ami’s update is already 3 years out of date.
