the latest to join the stars in frocks is none other than john travolta. i guess it is a little different from all of his previous roles, but this one looks like it is a goodie – “hairspray” (a remake) – about to hit the movie screens in the usa:

John Travolta’s experience playing Edna Turnblad in the movie-musical version of “Hairspray” certainly gave him a new appreciation for the female gender. And it definitely wasn’t the reaction he expected.

“I was so flirted with and so groped I was convinced that I’d have been a slut,” Travolta says of his time as Edna. “It was like a pregnant woman and everyone suddenly feels the right to touch her stomach. I didn’t mind it as it wasn’t me, but I thought, ‘Do they remember I’m under here?’ ” [all i can say is, john, spend 1:00-2:00 am at he taxi club on a sunday mroning sometime]

Unlike the interpretations of Divine and Harvey Fierstein, for John Waters’ original 1988 movie and the recent Broadway show, respectively, Travolta insisted that he wouldn’t agree to star in the movie if the character was portrayed in drag. He wanted Edna to become as real as possible as he saw being a fuller and less glamorous version of Delta Burke or Elizabeth Taylor.

“You can dress a guy on stage and you can do that joke where they’re like a refrigerator, but I don’t think that works [in the movies],” Travolta says. “I think [she] had to be watchable.”
