Why do I bother? What happens if your email dies
I’m not sure why I bother to try and help sometimes.
Everyone (?) knows that having a working email is part of the T&C of being on this site.
Generally, when the system finds an account that doesn’t accept emails it flags the profile with a big red warning at the top. If the error is something terminal like “account no longer exists” – then the profile gets purged out of TgR.
That’s normally the end of it. What can you do if the email doesn’t work!
But in one case I bent the rules for someone I knew, and so I told the system to let it run… for months…for years…..ignoring the fact that not only was their email going nowhere, but also they hadn’t even logged into TgR and updated their profile for years.
That was my first mistake.
Last week I stopped intervening in the system and let the profile go.
Then after talking with Bambi in the chat room I realised that I could perhaps use Facebook to let the member know they weren’t a member.
That was my second mistake.I’ve never tried to contact ex-members this (or any other) way before.
And I’m never going to do it again. Why?
Look at this facebook message thread…note the lack of any “sorry”, or “thankyou for letting me know”, or ” I understand I’ve broken the TgR T&C”….just abuse and instructions for what I have to do to help.and the venomous posting in facebook that resulted.
I should stress that I’m very careful about handing out passwords to people, or emailing them to accounts that are not registered with the profile. There have been cases in the past of people being victimised by identity theft. I don’t want to be part of that process.
So in the future if anyone wants to question why I just let 10 or so ex-members go each month and don’t try and chase them up. Let this thread be a reminder why not.
And as aside it also re-enforces why I think facebook is of questionable value to society.
