After 15 months of hosting COVID Zoom sessions I have to be honest and say that attendance has been disappointing. Over the past months I have enjoyed conversations with a few members; but even when social opportunities are limited by lock-down there doesn’t seem to be any sustained demand to get together virtually.

So it might be time to draw a line under my attempt to provide support and company in difficult times.

I suspect that this social opportunity will only be missed when it is no longer there.

But at this point I’m not proposing to host a July meeting.

If others want to reshape this event into something that has demonstrably better appeal then please post your ideas and see if they spark a favourable response.

    Cheers

    Adrian (currently in house-arrest)

It is gratifying to see that a feature of the old web site that took me many days to develop 8 or so years ago is osloved. But the flexibility that allowed one to achieve just about any web site functionality if one had the time, skills and patience to code it comes at a cost.

Having retired and found other absorbing interests I no longer had the time to keep a rapidly obsolete web site safe and running. So I moved over to the current site which is 99.9% built from standard components.

The upside of this is that I’m not to only person who could figure out how things work.

The downside is that you can’t have any special unique features.

And plotting incomplete addresses on a map is just one such feature that has to go. The new site can’t even sort members based on post code.

So thanks for missing the features, but no, they aren’t going to reappear.

Instead I have re-attempted an enhancement I tried (and failed) at when the site was launched.

Assuming I haven’t broken something (again) when you look at members on the members list it does show the state/postcode.

    Enjoy!

A confusing update on the census from https://www.outinperth.com/abs-says-no-gender-questions-will-be-in-the-census/ posted 15th May 2021

It appears that the option non-binary applies to sex NOT gender. This is great for the inter-sex community, but is a step back from the gender reporting in the last census.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has clarified that no questions about gender identity will be asked in the upcoming national census.

The questions and topics for the 2021 census were announced in November 2020, but recently there has been a flurry of media reports, talkback radio discussion and media commentary on the topic, triggered by an update to the standard that addresses how the ABS may handle measuring gender identity in the future.

In recent days media commentary has questioned if the next census will be accurate if people are allowed to choose descriptors for both sex and gender, however the ABS has reminded everyone the update to the standard does not apply to the current census.

“The 2021 Census will collect information on sex but will not collect information on gender.” the ABS said in a statement.

“The sex question is one of the most important in the Census, along with age and location, it directly feeds into the official estimates of Australia’s population.

“People who wish to report their sex as other than male or female will have the option of a ‘non-binary sex’ response category.

“The ABS defines a person’s sex as being based on their sex characteristics, such as their chromosomes, hormones and reproductive organs.

“Gender is about social and cultural differences in identity, expression and experience as a man, woman or non-binary person. A person’s gender may differ from their sex and may also differ from what is indicated on their legal documents.” the government organisation said.

11/05/2021 at 12:02 pm in reply to: UK ruling shows importance of caring for trans youth

    An update from Pink News….

Later in December, the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, which runs the UK’s only gender identity clinic for trans children, began the process of appealing ruling.

In March 2021, the High Court partially reversed its ruling, saying that a “loving parent” can consent to a child taking puberty blockers.

In the ruling, Justice Nathalie Lieven said that while the Bell case found it was unlikely that children could be found competent enough to consent to the gender-affirming care, “the key difference from Bell is that parents are, in general, in a position to understand and weigh up these matters and consider what is in the long and short term best interests of their child.”

She continued: “They are adults with full capacity and as the people who know their child best, and care for them the most, will be in a position to reach a fully informed decision… I agree with the view expressed that judges do not necessarily know best, and that judges should be slow to displace the decision making role of committed and loving parents.”

The Good Law Project said in a statement: “The decision is hugely significant. The barriers to accessing puberty blockers through the Tavistock were already enormous. Very few children were able to overcome them without parental support.

“The decision means that children with that support will no longer be barred from accessing puberty blockers by the Bell decision. It is not unreasonable to describe this morning’s decision as in large part reversing the practical effects of Bell.”

The follow-up from this article resulted in the ABC asserting:

The ABC has boldly declared ‘there is no such thing as free speech in Australia’ after banning users during a heated discussion about a transgender swimmer on the national broadcaster’s Facebook page.
The strident declaration about free speech came after some users were kicked off the page over alleged transphobic and sexist comments.

An initial moderator post in the article thread asked people to avoid being ‘nasty’ in response to the article and warned that the page ‘will not tolerate any transphobic or sexist commentary’.

‘We will be hiding comments and banning users without further notice if you breach our terms’.

It posted a link to the terms, which under the heading ‘ABC Online Communities’ said it encourages ‘rigorous debate and the sharing of diverse opinions’ but ‘expects community members to treat each other with respect and courtesy’.

Later on Thursday, the page moderator stated: ‘We have deleted and banned users as per ABC’s Terms of Use’ and again provided the link.

From there, the moderator’s message became notably more strident, stating: ‘FYI – There is no such thing as free speech in Australia.’

‘Hate speech or transphobic comments will not be tolerated regardless if it’s your opinion.’

This was reported in the UK Daily Mail – a paper holding more sensational standards, so they allowed comments – which were predictably pretty grubby. I’m not posting the article link because it isn’t worthy of web traffic.

    The article said that

A special meeting held on Thursday night of more than 50 members of the Randwick and Coogee Ladies Swimming Club, which manages the ocean pool in the eastern suburbs, voted unanimously to elect new office holders. The group believes it now has a mandate to take over the management and has asked Randwick Council to undertake an independent review of the pool’s operations.
Interim president-elect Tracy Grujovic of Coogee said there was a strong feeling at the meeting that in recent times the pool was being run more as a business than a not-for-profit, which is why they asked current president Marianne Kadunc and her committee members to step down.
“There had been an authoritarian running of the pool of late, with lots of restrictions and a loss of the welcoming, leisurely atmosphere and spirit the place once had,” Ms Grujovic said. “We want to give the pool back to the community….it had lost its soul and ethos under this management.”

So maybe there were other controversial decisions made beside the now-rescinded Transgender ban.
