TgR Wall Forums Transgender Radio Improving TgR Rebranding the web site

  • Rebranding the web site

Posted by Adrian on 10/06/2010 at 1:17 am

Change is in the air – which is a good thing as TR grows and reaches out to help more people.

One thing that has come clearly out of recent discussions in this forum is that the “brand name” TgR may have outlived its humorous origins as a pun on Transistor radio. Certainly the web site has gone a long way away from the radio grills, tuning dial , and radio buttons that characterised its early life. The association with “Tranny” may now not be a positive anymore.

I think the jargon term is “repositioning” – but as TR has grown broader it is perhaps time to change the way the website is presented. This will ensure that it is welcoming to all no mater where they are in the diverse gender spectrum.

One thing I don’t want to loose is all the goodwill and community awareness that TgR has built up over the years.

So my suggestion is to start a move from TgR to TransRadio – which will match the growing number of event titles like TransFormal and TransFusion.

To get there we would change the branding within the website to T-radio with a suitable logo – and retain TR as the common abbreviation. This will sit well with the informal terms T-girl / T-boy etc that are used in the community.

Then we would move towards promoting a parallel Australian domain name, probably transradio.com.au , so that both TgR and TransRadio lead to the one web site.

    Comments?
    Waste of time?
    Great idea?
    Whatever?
    I’m listening!

I am not sure that current members would be that concerned about changing the name. Most would be happy with the status quo.

But to attract new members and to make it more amenable to being located the name change to TransRadio, T-Radio for short, makes sense so long as the current name is also retained so that anyone searching for Trannyradio by name can find it.

Personally I would leave the name as is but can see the perceived benefits to the community at large from a subtle name change so would support the change to TransRadio.

    Hugs

    Hi Amanda,

I would have to agree with everypoint that JUne put forward, particuarly ensuring that if there is a change of name people would still be able to find you using the old name.

Hi Amanda, I personally would support a name change.

Name changes take time and some confusion for a time I agree with June in saying trannyradio.com should remain as a URL in case people wanted to find the site.

As I said in my other post the word Tranny does not sit well for me and I personally feel it stops some people joining the site. There might be a few strange ones like me who feel the same.

It also was mentioned on another page that it be nice to have F2Ms here. Under its current branding I just don’t think it will ever happen.

I’m not sure how to brand TR, I am hopeless at such things but Transgender Radio (possibly keep the current logo) as Amy suggested sounded OK to me. I’m sure we will all differ in opinion on that one.

I just feel a move away from Tranny from the general publics perspective as a branding for this site IMO will be a positive step.

    Just my own thoughts :)

I became a member of TR back in February 2003, it was the first website that made sense to me. I did very little for a long time but now I feel that I should be giving back to our community. And I see that TR is at a stage where it can open up its horizon to do more for the transgender community of all persuasions. But in saying that I have come very attached to the history that TR has made and meant to me and everyone else. So why not just keep the initials T.R. as an icon it can stand for anything such as transgender resource, trans-radio and it would make a very good logo and so on.

I know it sounds a little minimalist but sometimes breaking things down to its most basic form may be the best way forward. We can keep the history that Tranny-Radio has made, and I hope with little effort move forward into a even brighter future.

    Hi Amanda

Great idea. Everyone shortens the name to TR anyway. And you have the benefit of not losing members or information in the change over. And I agree that the name change will attract a more diverse membership (Tguys) as well.

Unlike many who comment here, I was initially put off coming to this site by the name “TrannyRadio” because I didn’t consider myself a “tranny”. I have and still do, find too many negative connotations associated with that word. However, being “trans” is far less offensive in my view. So, besides being more open to the wider gender diverse community, you would be removing some of the divisive undertones of the current name while not excluding any of the current members.

Before I get hung out to dry on these comments, it is just my personal view and have no issues with anyone who condsiders themselves a “tranny” as such. I have no doubt there will be those who oppose the change or cannot see the value in your proposition. Many people just oppose change as it requires a move from the comfort zone.

I commend you for approaching the membership first and not just making the changes and let us find out for ourselves when we can no longer find the website or any of our postings.

Thank you and you have my vote.

    1. I agree, the word ‘tranny’ has well passed its use-by date.
    2. I am not sure keeping ‘radio’ is actually that suitable either. The word sort of looses its ‘connection’ when ‘tranny’ is removed. As we use the internet and use the site to network er perhaps “Trans-Net” may be another more appropriate possibility?
    3. But keeping TR as initials only might be a solution too. (similar to DVD which basically has become a ‘name’ itself (Rather than the original Digital Versatile Disk).

TR can be the first two letters of TRans of course *smiles* “TR NET”?
TR NET is an interactive network not a (radio) broadcaster.

    4. If the name changes I hope the color palette of the web site may change too? It seems so 70’s :D

I’m actually attached to the radio bit because I don’t want to throw away everything about the origins of the web site just to be ‘trendy’. Net might be better than radio – but http://www.trans.net has already been taken and I don’t think I want to go for the very unusual http://www.trans.net.au.

As far as I’m concerned TR must remain. I’m not interested in throwing away all the recognition and awareness we have built up by changing to something that doesn’t abbreviate (not shorten) to TR.

Dream on! What has the name got to do with colours. Anyhow I’m very 70’s myself :-)

I understand your points and tend to agree, however Bambi’s comment has merit in my view, I certainly agree the TR retention and think you are on the right path. The net component also sounds good to me.

I just thought I should clarify.. I’m not discussing just changing a name.
To rebrand the site the name must match a domain name.
Much like trannyradio can be found at http://www.trannyradio.com

the new name has to be found at http://www.newname.com – or maybe even better newname.com.au

And because domain names have been on sale for as long as TR has been running – most of the obvious names have gone.
You can check you choice here…

    Amanda

I totally agree that the “TR” should remain as should the parallel address trannyradio.com as many of our group associate with the original name. I also agree that the word Tranny can be disparaging to some of our members and in my case, to put a label on myself, as a crossdresser, the word is also irrelevant.

I find nothing wrong with the format or colours as I’m also very 70’s, if not 60’s, orientated. Would not like to see bright pinks, lime greens and gaudy contrasting shades

I do feel that TR.net is not descriptive enough for new members and needs a lot of imagination to relate to our activities.

Perhaps we need to canvas some alternate names, select 3 or so and vote to see which is the most popular.

    Hugs

    Hi,

I feel if you were to change the name, changing it to just “TR” will be pointless

    1) The title should reflect the intention of the website for people searching it
    2) Search engines will not give priority to sites where the title does not reflect the website (TR means what?)
    3) New people will ask, what is TR? May as well keep the current name

I have no problem abbreviating any name you may choose to TR in conversations, posts. I just think the site should have a name.

    Hi all

As others have noted, Tranny may have negative connotations for some, while ‘radio’ may seem a bit anachronistic to others. Personally I have no problem with either, and makes the site relatively easy to find for those that have an interest in the subject.

If you are looking to make a change I might suggest you consider ‘TRansubstantiated’ or similar – i.e. TRansubstantiated.net or something along those lines. The name is an accurate reflection of the situation, but on the down side may make it difficult to find, and might also attract viewers looking for something else entirely – hehehehe.

    Hi everyone

I think we should throw some financial support behind Amanda our web admin. This is going to cost some money, especially registering domain names etc.

Please make a donation so TR can continue to be the wonderful place it is.

I’ve always abhored the name “tranny” being applied to me, but for some reason “Tranny Radio” has not bothered me.

GT – Girl Talk – the reference to GT may appeal to the motoring enthusiast members, and be obscure enough to put off nosey spouses.

I suppose I’m of a similar generation as our overworked Web Mistress so can relate – wasn’t there a song called “My Generation”, and another titled, “When I was Young” – that was a long time ago.

And yes Amy, I concur; some financial input would be reasonable to defray costs – and the time. Some nice pastel colours
