Allow me to add my sincere thanks to the hardworking organisers on a cracking event- I just did the Saturday night ball, but am sure that the rest of the weekend was equally good. Really enjoyed catching up with some old friends and meeting some new ones. Great that some of the folk I talked to who were coming along to their first ever event had such a great introduction. Special appreciation for booking such great musical acts (and sparing us either the superannuated clubland ‘comedians’ or the seemingly obligatory drag show…). Was interested to note that the previous night in Melbourne was the Globe Awards, the heavily corporatised celebration of all things LGBTQIA*
or whatever this week’s acronym is. Our event was much smaller scale but definitely the preferable place to be imho.

That’s awesome Jen, absolutely no babysitting involved! Can you let me know when you’ve got your plans together and we’ll work things out- happy to take cash on the night if that’s most convenient.

Hi all, if anyone is looking to come along just on the Saturday night I now have a spare ticket, let me know if you’d like to buy it.

It looks like it’s shaping up really well. Congrats to you, Fay and the rest of the team- you’re all bloody legends!

Have the accommodation packages been finalised yet? How soon will that be, do you think? Keen to stay onsite at the hotel if at all possible.

For regular contemporary wear no, but they’re a must for Fifties outfits! I like to go for authenticity so a big fan of Rago shapewear. Classic retro styles at affordable prices. I own two pieces: an open bottom corselette and a traditional waist girdle, both with three garters on each leg. A slight challenge to wriggle into but very comfortable once on. Only downside is that fixing stockings to the back garter is impossible once you’ve got the shapewear on unless you’ve got a willing helper, otherwise you need to fix the stocking when the shapewear is halfway on and then very carefully ease into it. The link below might be of interest, the items I own are the 9357 corselette and the 1359 girdle.

Thanks Emma, me too! Sorry I missed you at Transformal last year, always enjoy your writing on this site. xx

I’m in! Bringing two lady friends with me- one is a dear friend who came along with me to a Seahorse Ball in Sydney a decade ago and has never forgotten the experience. The other is her friend who was going to babysit for her on the night of the ball until she heard what the event was and decided she wanted to come too! So my friend needs to find another babysitter now, but at least has a couple of months to do so!

Member07/04/2019 at 10:55 am in reply to: How Lottie’s family accepted her as a transgender girl — and why it’s a secret at schoolMadness. A little boy likes pink, and all of a sudden he’s supposedly a girl (as opposed to, say, a little boy who happens to like pink?) And how long do these idiot parents think this secret is going to be kept a secret? Sooner or later it’s inevitably going to come out that the kid is not a girl- and has been lying to all of ‘her’ friends for all this time, and what happens then? Or are these wonderful puberty blockers just going to solve the problem by effectively turning the poor kid into a eunuch? Said it before, and I’ll say it again, this trans kids thing is a massive scandal waiting to happen, and a lot of vulnerable kids are being put at risk by some very shady people. When- not if- it all falls over, people are going to be running for cover all over the place, and some serious questions should be getting asked.

Anyone who seriously thought that Butterfly was a show with a happy ending should probably read this. There has been no testing done on the long-term effects of puberty blockers. Putting gender non-conforming kids on them because they like the ‘wrong’ toys is a medical scandal that is going to be huge when it breaks. The whole Butterfly show was basically just propaganda for the ghastly Mermaids organisation, who should be the subject of a Royal Commission in the UK for the damage they’ve done to a whole generation of vulnerable children. Happening here in Australia too, and being cheered on by people who think they’re being progressive.

Whoops! Sorry about that!

I share the concerns of the author. I think this TV series is anything but progressive. The whole ‘trans kid’ phenomenon seems deeply dodgy to me.

Really sad to hear this news. I met Jan in 2007 when as a very nervous young thing I drove up to Sydney to see if Seahorse thought I could cut the mustard, Jan was the ‘Big Sister’ designated to check me out. We met in boy mode, had a good chat- as others have mentioned, she had a wonderful way of putting people at their ease. Our conversation went well, and she invited me to join her and a few others for a night out in Sydney later that evening, this was the first time I had ever gone out in public dressed (as opposed to a quick and nervous walk around the block long after lights out). Due to nerves I drank rather more Crownies at Jan’s before we headed out, and some parts of the evening are still a blur to this day, but others are not- just an exhilarating leap into a world that I didn’t dream existed before. After that I saw Jan a few times at Seahorse Balls and at that first magnificent Transformal, but sadly life got in the way for both of us and I hadn’t seen her in years. A wonderful human being gone too soon, but very fondly remembered. Vale Jan.

Hi all, been meaning to reply on this topic for some time but internet issues…now resolved, thankfully! One point that hasn’t been mentioned is that by virtue of being the capital, Canberra is actually a pretty small town – a lot of people either work in the public service or are connected to politics in some way, and there’s about a two degree of separation factor between people here. Those of us in that boat who want to maintain our privacy just aren’t that likely to get frocked up and then go hang out at a mainstream bar. Even Cube (which has its own reputational issues) is problematic as Canberra’s gay community is pretty tightknit and gossipy (even worse than elsewhere!). Of the other places mentioned, Tilleys as far as I’ve known it has been better for brunching than a night out (particularly since they stopped doing live music) and I can’t vouch for that one in Manuka (although having drag shows would be a good enough reason not to go anywhere near it for mine). I’ve been to the CTN a few times (they only do things once a month) and the people are fine but sitting around just chatting over microwave pizza isn’t really the most fun Saturday night imaginable, and for some reason that house in Ainslie is the only one in Canberra (or possibly Australia) that doesn’t have a bathroom mirror! Not good when you need to confirm if your wig is on straight. A Gender Agenda doesn’t interest me as I’m not into the politics at all. None of this means that Canberra isn’t a great place to live – it absolutely is! – but if I wanted a fun night out en femme (as I think the OP was seeking) I’d be heading up the highway.
