I fly quite a bit to ‘unusual places’ and you have to be prepared for ‘special treatment’ when flying international. Although it can be quite embarrassing to be picked out of the crowd I think it helps to remember two things:
    a) the security staff are only doing their job. And in many airports round the world the threat of them encountering someone with explosives or a weapon strapped to their body is more real than it is in Adelaide.
    b) you are traveling presenting the way you do because that is the real you. Any inconvenience you may experience is minor compared to the discomfort of having to pretend to be someone you are not.

The introduction of full body scanners was discussed previously in this thread:
    http://forum.tgr.net.au/cms/forum/F171/5210-full-body-scanning-at-airports
In that thread it suggested that:

    Quote:
    10.10 Transgender and intersex communities
Any unknown object on the body will show up on a scan as an item that requires additional screening. If further screening such as a frisk search is required following a scan, passengers will always be offered the use of a private screening room. It may also be appropriate for transgender passengers to choose at the time whether they are more comfortable with a female or male screening officer conducting their frisk search.

I can confirm from my personal experience that you won’t find such an enlightened approach as you fly round the world. In general an alert from the machine because you don’t match the selected body type (male or female) will result in a full body search in public. Personally I’d rather have a guy discovering my boobs than a lady groping in my groin…. so I’m comfortable in insisting that they treat me according to my biological sex (and what is printed on my passport) – not how I present.

On a recent extended holiday I attracted 4 or 5 body searches which is good. It shows that the security staff are doing their job well. The most awkward search was at Istanbul Airport (subject to a terrorist attack only weeks before). A body search found my bra straps and the guy was obviously concerned that I had explosives strapped to my chest. That lead to a more detailed search (held in private) which I guess was just as embarrassing for the security officers as it was for me. When I flew through the airport again a few weeks later I just got a smile from the same guy and pleasant greeting!

So my answer to the question…

    Quote:
I wonder what a better solution is for both security and us

I think there is nothing badly wrong with the current scanners – given that they scan based on biologic sex (not gender). Think through what your attitude is to your biological sex and gender presentation in advance. Don’t be nervous, don’t make an necessary fuss, and enjoy your flight.

    Madeline,
To ask questions and explore options is healthy. After all it is your health and well being you are making decisions about – and what is ‘right’ for one person may not be right for you. But if you expecting definite answers then be prepared to be disappointed.

I expect that the GP or an Endo will be able to answer these questions

You can approach your GP/Endo with two attitudes. You can just choose to believe everything you are told, or you can question it and discover the thin ice ‘medical opinion’ is currently based on.
Most people seem to go with the first option – as the fastest route to a perceived end result. That is why many girls find my , perhaps more rational, approach annoying.

But at the risk of annoying some, if you want to take a more pro-active approach to your transition then I’d suggest some elements on which to base your questions.

    1. Drop any idea you may have been given that Testosterone makes boys and Estrogen makes girls. The reported side effects of taking testosterone include growing breasts and shrinking testicles. Hormones are artificial chemicals that have been created by the pharmaceutical industry to meet marketing goals – those goals may not match exactly what you hope or expect to achieve.

    2. Remember that the human endocrine system is a complex self-regulating system that is poorly understood. Do your own research on how the endocrine system organises itself to give genetic women a monthly fertility cycle – it is amazing. Adding or removing hormonal agents to such a complex system will often produce unexpected (and possibly unwanted) results. Certainly the results will be hard to predict in a particular individual

    3. Understand that the biological force behind homosexuality and gender identity is still obscure and subject to debate. This is true, even though you may choose treatments that are based on an assumption that we do understand what makes us the way we are.

    4. Don’t ask your clinician for statistically valid, peer reviewed, clinical trial data for the journey you are going on. It just doesn’t exist. In the absence of scientific data you have to accept that the treatments you elect to have may be shown in future times to be at best ineffective and at worst dangerous. Endocrinology has a history to date littered with well meaning but ill conceived treatments.

I could go on…but I don’t want to cloud the issue too much. At the end of the day, it is your body, and I can vouch that HRT can make you feel much more comfortable with that body.

Just be prepared to monitor, experiment and adapt!

The Trump administration on Wednesday formally withdrew Obama administration rules granting transgender individuals access to the sex-segregated facilities of their choice, including bathrooms.

The rules were dropped because they didn’t “contain extensive legal analysis or explain how the position is consistent with the express language of Title IX, nor did they undergo any formal public process,” according to an official letter to the civil-rights divisions of the departments of Justice and Education from acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights T.E. Wheeler and acting Assistant Education Secretary for Civil Rights Sandra Battle.

They added that former President Barack Obama’s rules had set off significant litigation, noting in particular that courts differed over the definition of the term “sex.” The letter also emphasised the agencies’ preference that states and local school districts be given a primary role in setting education policy.

“The president has made it clear throughout the campaign that he is a firm believer in states’ rights and that certain issues like this are not best dealt with at the federal level,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer said at a news conference Wednesday.

He added that the Obama administration’s guidance was “stalled, never fully implemented.”

The Trump administration’s guidance staked a position in a contentious debate about transgender rights, including whether schools and states can require people to use sex-segregated facilities, including bathrooms, that correspond to the sex on their birth certificates.

    Monday 20th February

    Return to an era of
    grace, elegance and charm;
    and celebrate gender diversity.

TransFormal is held each May in the timeless elegance of the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba. TransFormal is open to all, but particularly to everyone anywhere in the gender diverse spectrum, M2F, F2M, gender queer, and their friends and family. For those who have yet to come out in public, the event offers the chance to socialize without leaving the hotel, but with the encouragement and support of others. Those who are socially active will appreciate the convenient location of the hotel, right on the main street and close to a wealth of fantastic shops, cafes and art galleries.

There are three ticketing choices this year:

    Quote:
3 Day Weekend – Friday to Monday morning
2 Day Weekend – Friday to Sunday morning
    Formal Only – Saturday night

    EARLYBIRD SPECIAL

In February TgR Members can obtain a $10 discount on their 3 Day Weekend Ticket

The Ultra-Trail Run will be held on the same weekend as TransFormal 2017. Anyone planning to attend TransFormal would be advised to reserve accommodation as soon as possible, and certainly not leave it till the last month when availability will be very restricted.

After a week of ticket sales the only word I can use to describe the response is incredible. So a big thank you to everyone who pressed the I-wana-go button as soon as the light went green.

If we squeeze up tight I can sell just another 10 weekend tickets and perhaps up to 21 formal only tickets. And there are still 80 days to wait till we switch on the lights in Katoomba.

It’s sounding as if Transformal will be BIG this year!

I’ve been bowled over by the response – in four days we have sold over half the tickets to TransFormal. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

A big thank you to everyone who has shown such faith in the event (after all we haven’t released the weekend program yet!!) :P

With over half the tickets gone some options are virtually sold-out. There are only a couple of 3-Day tickets left now. And half the super-value Traditional Rooms have been snapped up by bargain hunters.

If you want to stay in the Carrington for Transformal you have to do the old fashioned thing and phone their reservations team.
I have a very large block of rooms held back for those who buy TransFormal tickets. And to make things simpler for the hotel they block the entire hotel through on-line booking sites (including the hotel’s own).

17/01/2017 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Bradly Manning is revealed to be gender diverse

    January 18th 2017

President Obama on Tuesday largely commuted the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the army intelligence analyst convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration, and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous.

The decision by Mr Obama rescued Ms Manning, who twice tried to commit suicide last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the male military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She has been jailed for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction.

Now, under the terms of Mr Obama’s commutation announced by the White House on Tuesday, Ms Manning is set to be freed in five months, on May 17 of this year, rather than in 2045.

The commutation also relieved the Department of Defense of the difficult responsibility of her incarceration as she pushes for treatment for her gender dysphoria — including sex reassignment surgery — that the military has no experience providing.

The Elos ME website specifically states that it will only work on women’s facial hair. If it is a grey beard you are trying to remove then they don’t claim the product will do that.
So the usual advice – read the small print very carefully before spending $$$ on the latest miracle!

Do keep the ideas flowing – its good to get some more feedback.

    Quote:
Wine tasting sessions are IMO a necessity for TF

This is a tricky topic. The numbers on Friday night have grown so much since the times when a tasting for 12 in the cellars would suffice. Last year there were 40 at the tastings – and the standup session in the Library had feedback that was a lot more mixed.
So even though the tasting has been enjoyed in the past it is tricky to see how we can continue it as a Friday night event and maintain the quality.
I’ll talk to the hotel later this month when I go to explore ideas with them – there may be some scope for something different given the redevelopment of the cellars.

And as an aside I am reluctant to stray too far from my original tag line – “return to an age of grace, elegance and charm”. IMHO that’s why the 1920’s dress theme was a success, it works with the building.
