This topic is interesting and has made me think about what I have gone through. The idea of transitioning but remaining in boy mode until you no longer pass as male is a great idea, if you can do it. I started that way, no clear plan, just started using HRTand getting rid of body hair. I kept it all very secret, it took me ages to even see a Doctor, (please don’t buy hormones or blockers over the Internet, very dangerous). My problem is that I am not likely to be able to effectively pass as a woman, so for me when I am referred to as a female by a stranger it is a big thrill.

The point I am getting to is that it is a great idea if you can do it,but not everyone can. Because of my age, I felt that I had to transition relatively quickly once I had made the decision. Also because of my size I will always be seen by some as a man in a dress, sad but so be it. However I would not and cannot go back to the person I was. Today I am comfortable being Jenn, I present as somewhere on the gender spectrum, (very much on the female side) and have had nobody try to give me a hard time in public. The biggest problem is changing records, (how many databases do we appear on?)

To be able to transition in stealth would be great but not always practical.

What would happen if we, as a group, started using our own title, something totally neutral. As Adrian said earlier on, most of the current titles are going to offend somebody, , which I agree with. If we used “M” as a title it would be hard for it to be any more gender neutral. Eventually people may get to realise that titles are a waste of time and drop them altogether.

This is a very good summary of a difficult topic. Thank you. I have come across the full range from rejection to understanding and it is sometimes difficult to live with but this puts it into a context that helps.

RSA and the Security that most licenced premises are required to have as part of their license conditions is supposed to prevent this type of behavior from happening, unfortunately though most pubs are only worried about keeping their licence and making a profit. The only way they will change is by threatening their licence and sue them, it hits the two things that they hold dear. This may force them to put the needs and safety of the customers up there with making money. This should not have happened.

    Hi Abby,

You are not too late, (or too old). I am 64 and started HRT five years ago, so age is not the thing. As has already been mentioned DO go and seek medical advice and help, it is a must do. I tried self medicating, it was a very bad idea.

Might I suggest that you need to think about talking to family members first. I found that it was the hardest part of transitioning.

    Best wishes,

    Jenn

  • Hi Martina,

I fully agree, not all trans people want to fully transition or have the need to. I think it’s one of the misconceptions that the general population needs to understand. More education is needed.

    http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/the-oxford-english-dictionary-has-officially-added-the-gender-neutral-title-mx/story-fnixwvgh-1227336229531

I found this this article just now, it looks like it is official, at least according to the Oxford Dictionary.

  • Hi Adrian,

I have just finished reading the article, it is very good. I agree with the article that it is or can be hard being trans, but I think the article showed that there has been good progress in gaining equality and breaking down the barriers. Much more can and needs to be done but there was also a message of hope in the article.

    Cheers Jenn

I’m not convinced that Mx is a salutation that I would be comfortable with. It sounds like mixed as in mixed up. It would be nice to have some form of title that was gender neutral perhaps just M. Then it could be whatever you want it to be.

When I started changing my details on so many documents and data bases I went with Ms. I am too old to be a Miss, I was not comfortable with Mrs, (I was married and that title was my wife’s and I will not do that to her memory). So by default I went with Ms.

I agree with Amanda that it would be better if we had the option not to use titles, unfortunately we seem to be stuck with them for the present.

It would be interesting if there was a survey of the public reaction to Obama’s comments, it might give an insight to how people actually view the trans* community. Still, good positive press.

It’s a great positive story,I liked Hannah’s comment that, “I’m not just trans, I’m much more”.

    Hi Martina,

I’m glad to hear that your experience has been more positive than I expected, as I said I was only there for a short time. For trans people to be considered for inclusion in the new Constitution does indicate a greater degree of acceptance and inclusion.

Thank you Bee, I’ll track it down. I have never watched any on line TV, , didn’t know it was there. I’m not very technology savvy.

I read an article a few days ago where the Russian Minister responsible states that they are not banning trans people from driving but people with “mental disorders”. I still find this a bit disturbing, who defines what is a “mental disorder”?It is not so long ago that being gender or sex diverse in this country was viewed as a disorder.

I wonder if the Russians are doing a bit of spin doctoring?

I haven’t been marching for years but would be happy to have a go, please count me in for the march. I don’t think I would have anything to speak about on the topic of young trans people, I was a late bloomer.
    Cheers Jenn
