Quote:for a small 7% fee
Interesting use of the word small! Its all relative I suppose – they want us to consider the payPal fee of 2 – 3% as being minuscule I guess!

Quote:Look at how well the Intersex community has created its own unique brand identity which has taken from under the Transgender umbrella.
An interesting twist in the debate. When I first heard the term “Trans” being peddled it was only a couple of years ago in a talk by Kathy Noble of http://www.changelingaspects.com. (Do I lead a sheltered life or is this “trans” thing a very recent phenomena in Australia?). The justification I was given then was that we needed an umbrella term that embraced intersex people.
This was one of these loaded claims – if you argue about the need for a new name then you are denying the rights of intersex people. So I shut up!
But as time has passed, I too see that intersex people are making their own identity. And in the extract from the human rights commission we read…Quote:Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and IntersexSo Trans doesn’t embrace Intersex officially any more…
Is it just me who is confused?
Can some one tell me again, just why do we need trans and what exactly does it mean! -
For the record, the reasons I have taken a stand against trans on TR are:
a) it has no clear definition and so can be taken to include anyone you want it to. This will have the effect of blurring any distinctions that need to be made when communicating with the general public. (Which I think is the point jade is making)
b) it is grammatically indefensible, and appears just to be a non-word, so devoid of actual meaning that it is certain to offend no-one. (which I believe is the point Christina made)
c) the current use of the word seems to be pushed on the behalf of others by a small vocal minority (the sort of people who make a point of making submissions to bodies like the human rights commission). There is no evidence that our community wants this new label, but that is unlikely to deter the well meaning do-gooders.
d) a significant number of members of the TR community find the term offensive, or do not associate with it.
To me that seems like a good enough reason to keep it out of TR.
From my understanding Jade is asking if people are motivated enough to fight against its adoption in the wider community (correct me if I’ve got that wrong). -

So we need 400 points before we can pm!! 😯 oh well I say I will have PM back in 2020. shrugs
As Amanda said not the end of the known universe. Its not like I am on anyones radar anway 😆

I’m very happy with the new chat room – people are using it in the way we intend it for support and social contact. Thank you all!
As a reward I’ve lowered the threshold for PM chat down to 200 points – or an Excellent reputation. -
I was holding off on making a post summarising the long discussions on TR about labels – because I didn’t want to fuel any more discussions.
But your post makes it clear I need to state the TR position.
You will see from my announcement post in this forum that the use of trans on TR is deprecated – it is a Trans free zone I hope! -
Quote:Keys, Amanda?
Not sure where I left them V
Seriously though, we have to accept that in a forum a controversial issue will attract some sort of divided comment. I don’t mind that – I only take action when people question the rights of others to hold differing opinions.
So if you identify a worthy cause the forum is really good for finding out how widely your views are shared by others – it is a sounding board.
But the current format does not lend itself to groups of similar minded people being able to form and execute any actions. Which is of course the right of all of us in a free society.
So I need to discuss some alternative/additions to TR – but this thread is NOT the place to do that ,otherwise I will be going off topic and will have to delete my own post.
I’ll go back looking for those keys – will let you know when I find them!

Virginia,
Are you aware if either of these videos were shown in Australia?
Or are they just an example of how bad things are in the USA? -
To avoid one group of the other having the “final say” I’m going to make a closing post before locking this thread off.
As an observer of the community I feel this thread needs to remain as a reminder that:
a) some members of our community genuinely feel the need to take action to try and better our lot, if not now, but in the future.
b) validating the action and obtaining consensus in such a diverse community for such action is difficult
c) without consensus the community turns to questioning those holding differing viewsClearly there are more effective structures for mobilising community action about something that the TR forums. Getup seems to have identified this need.
But until there is “Getup” for our community all you can do is alert people to a potential issue in these forums,
take individual action as you feel is right,….and rely on the admins to close the thread down when it just reflects an increasing polarization of differing views.
Which is what has happened to this thread!

Of course not
19. Do aliens exist? Do we exist?
20. Do you wish that you had been born female? It wouldn’t worry me – but I guess I would have turned out a bit of a tom boy! -
My view is that if members want to talk about something that is not well catered for elsewhere then we create a forum – after all it doesn’t cost anything. But it isn’t worth creating a forum if it is only going to get two posts a year!
The only forum I think that has been vetoed was a suggestion to have a general ‘health’ forum. But that is a topic catered for much better by dedicated ‘health’ web portals. -
Quote:It is now July 2009 and this month we went clear through the 600 member mark. …..
Now is anyone making bets on how long till we hit the 700 mark?I’ve been trimming lapsed members out of the database aggressively over the last couple of months, but I can’t delay the announcement any more.
It is now July 2010, and with Jade from Western Australia joining today we have 700 members of TR.
The involvement of the community continues to be strong – 38% of the members logged on in the last week. In the last month 59% of the members logged on at least once. Thanks to everyone for your support, ideas, and enthusiasm in helping TR continue to grow in this way.
Lets see if we hit 800 in July 2011!
