Hi Jen, I knew it, one’s sexuality is private, taboo, supposedly never considered or thought about. That notion is utter bullshit, as humans we are primarily sexual beings, if we weren’t then the human race would have died out squillions of years ago. I believe our sexuality can change over the period of a lifetime, or even fluctuate, and why not? I’ve never been attracted to males, shudder the thought, but then I live cocooned in isolation around feminine ideas, thoughts and of course, ballet. I’m a ballet nut from way back). And just what are we going to do about this sexuality bit; nothing, it’s something we live with, day in day out, usually without giving it a thought, it’s part of us. Travel well my good friend.

  • We do pause to reflect on the 20 November for those of our community who have died by whatever means.

  • How nice; I’d love to see the similar result using some old, decrepit and wrinkly fart, we may have had a slightly differing response.

I’ve had a go at this thread on a previous occasion, years ago I believe. My real first name, Ellis could well suit either male or female, I have come across a few female Ellis’s, not a bad name; one for not following the crowd. Now the nearest I’ve heard would be Elise, not a bad name, and I have considered it, like Fido, I would automatically answer to such a name. But then I’ve been Liz for so damn long I answer quite readily to Liz. What the hell, our moggie answers to Milly, Cat, Fur ball or even Pest.

I do believe Georgie’s startling progress in her continuous journey for transition is a sign of the times. These times are a reflection of the growing level of acceptance throughout at least, Australia. It would be wonderful if such acceptance was throughout the continent, but alas, it isn’t and never will be, it would be a false hope. Such progress for Georgie is progress for us all and it is the tenacity of all the family which secured the award. Good luck to Georgie on her journey of self discovery.

  • Hi Jen, I wonder just benefits from such archaic rules that are superfluous to progressive living; why the hell can’t all follow the lead of the ACT which, by the way still has a long way to go. Go well my friend.

I think Canberra would probably be the safest city in Australia, even then; I don’t trust anyone, I suppose that’s the latent copper in me. Always carry a loaded 9mm semi automatic. No one can outrun a speeding bullet, except perhaps Superman.

I think sodomy was punishable by hanging slightly prior to ‘Stella’s’ time. My flippant remark is indicative of a good public topping, it beats a grand final any day; just bring your knitting to help pass the time away.

Riley, absolutely not; remember Riley from Fawlty Towers, the bumbling builder and renovator.

    Fiona,

    1. It has always been that way, and sometimes the other way around. That’s why we have to fight for what we think is right.

    2. Always been that way, it seems totally unfair, the good folk are to often silent (Germany 1939 – 1945)

In total agreement with you, Jenn; it’s just common sense in the final analysis.

Am I right or does the Guardian have a letter for every occasion? A put up job?

  • I watched Georgie Stone’s story on ABC iview, Her indoors watched the Australian story at the time of broadcast. Two differing slants on the same story. I was indeed pleased for the protagonist, Georgie, she appeared to have it altogether, knew what she wanted and the direction on which to travel. A loving and supportive family; what more could she want? Obvious from the start, puberty blockers had been prescribed, feminine voice, feminine hair line, in fact altogether a feminine, soon to be an attractive young woman. My wife came away from the story with an entirely different perspective, and I must agree she was probably right. All was focussed on the transgender individual, everything to the detriment of everyone else. What effect had Georgie and her challenges had on her brother? Her brother experienced a deep depressive illness, and I suspect suicidal thoughts and maybe actions; not good. And reading between the lines, his depression was a continuing illness. The parents had separated as a result of what? the impact of the transgender daughter? There was yet another story and a half over and above the story of Georgie Stone. Even mum had reverted to her maiden name. As my wife pointed out it’s always about the individual transgender person, without ever considering the enormous impact and strain put on family, perhaps friends and the ruination of their lives. Yes, there’s definitely a hint of ‘sour grapes’ but I think for once my wife is right. Perhaps we, as individuals have a need to tread carefully.

  • Well, the 2016 census was indeed one almighty cock-up, all round. I doubt very much the statistics that may be gleaned from the reply of all Australians would be anywhere near accurate. As our beloved PM said, ‘heads will roll’ Perhaps next time the Census will be conducted properly, not relying on electronic answers which can be manipulated, hacked, compromised and, or otherwise stuffed. How on earth can an accurate answer on the numbers of Transgender people in Australia be obtained from some ambiguous question that is neither honest or straight forward.
I consider the correct question ought have been, Do you consider yourself ‘Gender Diverse’? Like many things people pussy foot around fearing offending someone and the necessity of being PC.
