I went to Professional Makeup artist Rawdon Slater. I felt a professional knows how to make up many people. And they are not trying to sell you anything. The staff at various cosmetic centers will do a make up for you for a purchase of product (MAC, etc), but they are understandably not used to making up trans people. In addition some of the ‘transformation ‘ Services around especially targeting trans people, seem, er to be highly over-priced and often under skilled.
I found going to a professional good for me as they would explain to me as to why some things are better for me, and also explain how things work, and what and why certain things were done. It was not just a make-up but an educational experience as well.
In fact I was so impressed that this service was beneficial to many people, I worked out an agreement with Rawdon. I set up a web site for him, and now we offer a service of a makeup lesson, with a DVD shot of the lesson (So you can review, and clearly see what was done, and the application techniques), and of a set of (usually 150) pro photographs afterwards. (I do the DVD and the photos).
Details are here http://rawdon.net63.net

Gender and sexuality are sometimes confused.
The Queensland Association for Healthy Communities Inc. has published a 28 page booklet that is designed to support service providers building rapport with transgender (trans) clients. Tips on client consultations, preventative health care and sexual health are provided to assist services working with trans clients.
A quote from that booklet –
“Gender identity and sexuality are not the same
A person’s sexual preference is independent of their gender identity. People often confuse gender identity and sexuality. Gender identity is an individual’s sense of identity in relation to the categories of male and female. Sexuality, on the other hand, is an individual’s sexual, emotional and physical attraction, and desire towards another person.
Trans people may identify as heterosexual, bisexual, gay, lesbian and asexual.
For example:
• Trans men attracted to women may identify as heterosexual
• Trans men attracted to men may identify as gay
• Trans women attracted to both men and women may identify as bisexual
• Trans women attracted to women may identify as a lesbian
A trans person’s sexuality/sexual identity is not dictated by their surgical
status or bodily state.”You can read the 28 page Oct 2008 publication here (PDF)

You don’t need $1,000,000. I did the FFS and SRS for AUD50,000 in 2008. But budget up to about AUD$20,000 for facial hair removal (electrolysis) if you have facial hair. Of course FFS costs depends on what you have done.

60 Minutes and many other TV Programs that claim to be ‘News Magazine” shows – pay for interviews. So the ‘guest’ is under pressure to ‘perform’. Please take these programs all with a grain of salt as most television is just entertainment and not informative journalism. The programs after the commercial stations evening news are notorious for being the former.

Felicity_Lane> Re: Ears lobes piercings: May I suggest you go to a professional body piercing place. They will do it with a correct piercing needle, and it will be all sterile. The ears can take up to 6 weeks to heel and during that time the piercings can’t be removed. I got captive ball circular piercings, not studs as they are easier to keep clean, I feel. I used sterile saline solution, sold for washing contact lenses and cotton buds to clean. (Don’t use the same cotton bud for the different ears).
I suggest not going to jewelry stores to get your ears pierced with a ‘gun’ that is not sterile, and just kept in a draw with other things. At a piercer the cost was for me in Brisbane $35 including the jewelry. (2 ear lobes – Sep 19 2008 pierced).

Re: Eyeliner:
You may want to try ‘Shiseido Fine Eyeliner’. This is a liquid eyeliner in a pen arrangement with a renewable cartridge and has a brush applicator. You can get as fine a line as you wish. And replace the cartridge and use different colors. I have been using this for about a year with good results. Details are below, and it is available where Shiseido is sold (Myer, David Jones etc.)

I am sure there are ‘Clubs’ in the Kyoto area. Regarding general going out (days etc). foreigners stand out in Japan anyway, so you will get ‘looks’ no matter what clothing you wear. I would suggest only traveling (international) in the look that your photo ID shows, to avoid any complications. Have a great time. It will be warmish *smiles*

Amanda> I am amazed you put so much time and effort – I doubt I would be so patient and would probably end up wringing someone’s neck. I found that many T-Girls are computer very very not savvy. Thanks for sharing what goes on in the background.

I think you will find that all States and Territories in Australia have the same requirement as the Northern Territory – except The state of Queensland… In Queensland one requires a Change of name certificate for the name change to be put on a Drivers Licence, and in addition if one receives a letter from ones Psychiatrist stating one is on the Gender reassignment Program etc. QLD Transport will allow an ‘F’ to be placed on the licence, irrespective of what the gender is on the change of name certificate.
FYI New Zealand has the same policy as Queensland I understand.
I hope this information was useful.

Ella:
You might want to try TV Paint Stick by Kryolan. This is particularly made for The TV (Television) industry and is available here in Australia through many outlets. Many show girls use this. It will cover and it will last. Also they make a palette ‘wheel’ of concealers too.
In Brisbane, QLD it is available from
http://www.latonasmakeup.com.au/If you are considering a professional makeup lesson (2 hours) (not a ‘make-over’) let me know as I have a friend in the industry (Makes up QLD Opera etc.) and will teach you and also make you up correctly for day / night.
PS: Actually Miss Lina may not bite, but I do,
but not too hard
